“United Nations representatives, Governmental authority, Civil society organisations, private sectors, Ladies and Gentlemen good morning.
Today I am truly honored to be here at Orange the world campaign against gender based violence.
Well, Gender Based Violence (GBV) is an abuse of power that inflicts harm on the survivors. It may be physical, emotional or sexual harrassment involving rape, sexual abuse or intimate Partner violence.
Firstly, gender based violence has been reported as the most practised violence worldwide with women and children being the most affected victims. About seventy percent of women and children are suffering in almost every country in the world with their pains inflicted by none other than their family members.
Gender based violence can be in different forms. To start with, other girls especially college students engage themselves in GBV without realising in that most of them are involved in sexual affairs with men and women much older than them for commercial purposes. Rape is also apart of this violence, do you know that married women can also be raped by their own partners? This happens in most houses as they suffer in silence because they fear reporting the matter.
Women are not the only victims of gender based violence, Men also suffer from the violence inflicted to them by women but they chose to remain silent because of how they are viewed in the society. There are boys who have been defiled others being beaten and even abused. Another common violence in men is the so called ‘social justice ‘ when a man is caught stealing by the society they are brutally murdered by being burnt or beaten to death which is not the case with ladies. When a woman is caught stealing the society would sympathise with them and even take them for guidance and counseling before calling the police saying that they really lacked something which lead them to steal.
On the other hand, there are also some cultures which practice Gender Based Violence. Practices like Female Genital Mutilation and early marriages which is common in most communities can cause physical and emotional torture and can lead to death and even mental disorder. Other girls are even beaten and threatened if they decide to run away from the customes. This leads to reduced number of educated and independent women in the world and is not encouraged for as it is said educating a woman is like educating the whole nation.
We all should stand together as a nation in the fight against Gender Based Violence inorder to empower our youths and give them courage and strength to achieve their dreams for they are our future. Gender based violence can happen anywhere for instance at schools, at the road, government offices and even at religious centers .
In conclusion, Gender based violence can be stopped by anyone anywhere if we all join hands in stoping it by being each other’s support system. In case of any form of Gender Based Violence there are so many places you can report for instance, National Gender Based Violence hotline, counseling hotline, Danish refugee council, Windle and many many other organisations. Lets orange the world and stop violence against women. Thank you.”
